Background of the study
The advent of advanced translation technology has significantly influenced language interpretation in formal settings, including courtrooms. In Kano, Hausa language interpretation in court proceedings is increasingly assisted by digital translation tools designed to improve accuracy and efficiency. These technologies, which include automated speech recognition and computer-assisted translation systems, offer the promise of reducing human error and streamlining the interpretation process (Abdullahi, 2023). However, the integration of technology in legal interpretation presents its own challenges. Variations in speech patterns, dialectal differences, and the technical limitations of current software can lead to inaccuracies in translation (Suleiman, 2024). Additionally, reliance on technology may diminish the critical role of professional interpreters who are skilled in navigating the nuances of legal language and cultural context. This study explores how translation technology impacts Hausa language interpretation in Kano courtrooms, evaluating both its benefits and limitations. Through an analysis of courtroom proceedings, interviews with legal professionals and interpreters, and a review of technological performance, the research aims to provide comprehensive insights into the practical implications of technology in legal interpretation (Abdullahi, 2023).
Statement of the problem
Despite the promising advancements in translation technology, its application in Hausa language interpretation within Kano courtrooms faces significant hurdles. Inaccuracies arising from dialectal variations and technical errors in speech recognition software have led to instances of misinterpretation during legal proceedings (Suleiman, 2024). These issues not only undermine the reliability of court interpretations but also risk compromising legal outcomes and justice. Moreover, the overreliance on technology may marginalize the essential expertise of human interpreters, further complicating the integration of technological tools. This study seeks to identify the specific challenges associated with translation technology in legal settings and propose strategies to enhance its accuracy and effectiveness (Abdullahi, 2023).
